La zattera è un oggetto immaginifico e indispensabile che, nella storia dell’uomo, ha rappresentato la capacità di adattamento, l’attaccamento alla vita o il desiderio di altrove. Trasformando la zattera in un’allegoria della capacità progettuale, con Francesco Faccin abbiamo raccolto in questo libro dieci storie emblematiche che ci ricordano l’importanza dell’intuizione e la necessità, a volte, di infrangere le regole.
Dal viaggio di Thor Heyerdahl nel Pacifico alle imbarcazioni dei pescatori in Camerun realizzate con bottiglie di plastica, fino alla mongolfiera che nel 1979 permise la fuga dalla Germania Est: dieci racconti per ribadire che progettare è un bisogno umano primordiale, un antidoto all’alienazione.
Per noi, lavorare a questo libro è stata un’esperienza necessaria, una vera ventata d’aria fresca. Ci ha permesso di riscoprire e dare un nuovo significato alla parola design, spogliandola dalle sovrastrutture e riportandola alla sua essenza vitale. Condividere questo viaggio con un amico come Francesco ha reso tutto più autentico. Ne siamo usciti con una visione del design rinnovata: non più solo un mestiere, ma un atto vitale che ci permette, ogni giorno, di non essere "progettati" dagli altri.

The raft is an imaginative and indispensable object that, throughout human history, has represented our ability to adapt, our attachment to life, or our longing for "elsewhere." By transforming the raft into an allegory for design capability, we have collaborated with Francesco Faccin to collect ten emblematic stories in this book that remind us of the importance of intuition and the occasional necessity of breaking the rules.
From Thor Heyerdahl’s Pacific voyage to the Cameroonian fishermen’s boats made from plastic bottles, and even the hot-air balloon that enabled an escape from East Germany in 1979: these ten tales reaffirm that designing is a primordial human need—an antidote to alienation.
For us, working on this book was a necessary experience, a true breath of fresh air. It allowed us to rediscover and give new meaning to the word "design," stripping away the superstructures and returning it to its vital essence. Sharing this journey with a friend like Francesco made everything more authentic. We emerged with a renewed vision: design is no longer just a profession, but a vital act that allows us, every day, to avoid being "designed" by others.
